Modernist Literature Essay -- Modernist Literature Essays
Modernism emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century, following World War I and flowing through the ââ¬Å"roaring twenties.â⬠Materialism, crime, depression, and change filled this era. Reflecting the revolutionary time period, modernism itself was a revolution of style. Musicians, artists, and writers broke away from traditional, conventional techniques to create new, rebellious art. Modernism, in other words, was a change in how artists represented the world in their works. Passionate, sporadic jazz musicââ¬âreferred to as ââ¬Å"jungle musicâ⬠ââ¬âdanced through the music scene. Painters such as Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky stroked over the paintings of impressionist, representationalist artists, such as Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas. Poets like T.S. Eliot, e.e. cummings, Wallace Stevens, and William Carlos Williams broke the rules of conventional poetry. Lastly, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald replaced the plot-driven novels of the n ineteenth century with their works: The Sun Also Rises and The Great Gatsby. New was in, and new meant new ways of looking at and experiencing literature, poetry, and other forms of art. Modernists realized that there was more than just understanding a work, declaring that one could also enjoy art. Therefore, pleasure became extremely important. Pleasure filled the streets, with people unlawfully drinking alcohol, engaging in sexual relationships, and benefiting from the current prosperity; pleasure filled the arts. With pleasure came a preoccupation with perspective as well. A personââ¬â¢s perspective determines whether or not he or she enjoys art and really life itself. For the first time, therefore, pleasure and perspective were the main focus and interest of artists, thus formi... ...this new art. However, the mind did not suffer from its new flesh. The style of modernist writers is actually deceivingly simple. Although the sentences and words of modernist works seem uncomplicated and plain, the emotion and underlying problems are still very complex. Hemingwayââ¬â¢s The Sun Also Rises, for instance, is about more than drunk people. However, realizing that the reader may struggle to comprehend his difficult ideas, Hemingway, as well as the other modernist writers, added these revolutionary componentsââ¬âsuch as symbolism and leaner sentencesââ¬âto allow the reader to enjoy the art. One can communicate with and take pleasure in another being without fully understanding or delving into his complicated mind. One can enjoy artââ¬â¢s flesh without completely grasping its mind. Art as this full being was a new, modern idea that caused a revolution of style.

McClellan
The first campaign of the Civil War was the first win for the Union and was under the command of George B. McClellan.à It was a minor battle but with this battle, under McClellanââ¬â¢s leadership successfully drove confederate troops out of the Kanawha Valley of western Virginia in May and June of 1861.à This was described in James McPhersonââ¬â¢s book ââ¬Å"Ordeal by Fireâ⬠(159).à McClellanââ¬â¢s victory gave the region a firm grip for the Union side and kept it from becoming in control of the confederates and eventually became West Virginia.à But the first major battle was a totally different story. This was the battle of Bull Run Creek and it was a disaster.à McClellan though helped this battle and became the savior, if even for the moment.à Because McClellan replaced McDowell who was the general at the time and this became the boost he needed to later become general in chief (Rowland, 1998 p. 86).à McClellan spent the fall and winter drilling h is troops and whipping them into shape.à He was known for his slow way of doing things and this made Lincoln very agitated. This was probably why the rumors began to fly about McClellanââ¬â¢s inability to be a general began and it was no secret that McClellan had such contempt for Lincoln.à On more than one occasion President Lincoln it was said that he couldnââ¬â¢t understand why McClellan was taking so long and insisted he go into the battle field.à Lincoln insisting he was being too slow ordered the army into action, McClellanââ¬â¢s slowness was mentioned several times in both required readings and was said to be cautious or meticulous. Both books I read, ââ¬Å"Ordeal by Fireâ⬠and ââ¬Å"George B. McClellan and Civil War Historyâ⬠were written on the Civil War.à But Thomas Rowlandââ¬â¢s book core subject was on George B. McClellan.à James McPhersonââ¬â¢s book was more of a broader book covering the war with the central theme on the Civil Wa r and only discussed McClellanââ¬â¢s generalship in a small section of the book. The other book dealt more exclusively on the man and his abilities.à In Rowlandââ¬â¢s book he looked at the mental abilities of McClellanââ¬â¢s and coined him deranged and paranoiac.à This too was mentioned in McPhersonââ¬â¢s book but only that he had possible mental problems and possibly other problems that affected his abilities of being a general. Some of the problems with McClellan that both books do address are his slowness and problems of exaggeration.à This exaggeration usually involved how many were in the opposing troops or in his troopââ¬â¢s inabilities to win a battle because of training time or supplies.à It is commonly accepted though that McClellan was considered a failure as a general, but Rowland still defends his generalship to the bitter end. There were several bad decisions made by McClellan during his service in the Civil War.à Union forces in the West had won some very important victories before McClellan could make a move to aid the fighting troops and this was a dark cloud over his leadership.à The successes around the edge of the confederacy did not help to relieve the frustration many were feeling at the inactivity or failure of the Union forces on the eastern front and this helped to reinforce the general attitude towards McClellanââ¬â¢s generalship.Lincoln, because of this frustration, relieved McClellan of his command and ordered him to take the offensive command at the head of the Army of the Potomac and forced McClellan to begin campaigning (McPherson, 1982 p. 211).à The overland route to Richmond was difficult so instead he moved his forces by water to the peninsula southeast of the confederate capital.à After landing at Fort Monroe, a Union post, McClellan began moving up the peninsula and in early April of 1862.à For months he remained at Yorktown choosing to besiege the enemy instead of attacking. This was another sign of his slowness and stagnation (Rowland, 1998 p. 107).à Then after the fall of Yorktown he pushed ahead to a point twenty miles from Richmond and waited for troops he had expected Lincoln would send, but that didnââ¬â¢t happen because Lincoln believed that the troops should instead be sent to defend Washington instead.à This infuriated McClellan. Many believe that if McClellan had moved more swiftly and decisively he probably would have captured Richmond with the forces he had available.à But with a combination of faulty intelligence reports and his own natural caution he failed.à He believed that he was outnumbered by the opposing troops and this was wrong (McPherson, 1982 p. 234).à It was by the end of May that the Confederates learned that McClellanââ¬â¢s army was divided on each side of the Chickahominy River and decided to attack. This battle named Seven Pines was where McClellan was barely able to hold his ground.à Finally Corps from the othe r side of the river crossed and saved his butt.à It was during this battle that General Lee took command of the confederate army.à General Lee at the end of June decided to put an all out effort to expel McClellan from his position on the outskirts of Richmond.à In a series of battles that lasted seven days McClellan warded off Leeââ¬â¢s final assaults at Malvera hill and decided to retreat down the peninsula to a more secure point.à In doing this it convinced Lincoln that the peninsula campaign was a wasted battle (Rowland, 1998 p. 66-67).It was on July 11th, 1862 that Lincoln appointed General Henry W. Halleck who had been in command in the western theater, to be the new general in chief.à Halleck was ordered by Lincoln to command McClellan to withdrawal his army from the peninsula and join forces under General Pope that was preparing to move on Richmond by the overland route.à Again McClellan was slow in responding and the confederates got to Pope before he d id.à Pope was badly beaten before McClellan could arrive.à This pissed Lincoln off and McClellan was ordered back to Washington where he was stripped of his command, but later out of desperation he was reappointed to the head of the army of the Potomac (McPherson, 1982 p. 255-260).Meanwhile Lee and his troops went on to invade Maryland in hopes of isolating Washington from the rest of the North.à Soon McClellan caught up with him near Sharpsburg and this became the bloodiest one day battle of the Civil War.à At Antietam on September 17th almost five thousand solders were killed on both sides and another eighteen thousand were wounded. The battle ended in a draw forcing Lee to withdraw south of the Potomac River to protect his low supplies.à McClellan again was slow in his pursuit of the general and Lincoln blamed him for letting the enemy escape (Rowland, 1998 p.176).à This lead to Lincoln believing he needed a stronger general because McClellan was so slow that he appointed Ambrose B. Burnside as commander of the Army of the Potomac.à A mistake on Lincolns part because Rowland believed he was ââ¬Å"replacing someone slow with someone that was considered denseâ⬠(Rowland, 1998 p. 223).In Rowlandââ¬â¢s book he argues the war was divided with each having demands on the commanders that fought the battles.à In Rowlandââ¬â¢s book it depicts McClellan as overly cautious, proud, psychologically impaired, yet having an aristocratic air about him.à This aristocratic officer was very apt at fighting very formidable commanders such as Lee and Jackson.à With the battle of Seven Pines and Antietam campaign he had to face what Rowland says were very tough troops that gave McClellan every reason for caution.à Other reasons for McClellanââ¬â¢s failures were the troops he was given.à Thrown together hastily and unprepared.à He said the nation was expecting quick wins and fast victories that just didnââ¬â¢t happen.à Thi s too is why McClellanââ¬â¢s slowness was brought up so many times in each book.Sources used to write the books included historical documents, letters and diaries, but one thing that Rowland differs from McPherson is that he gives more weight to writings by other professionals that are considered quite controversial on the subject.à Rowland used those sources for the basis of his thesis, which I believe gives a little less credibility to his work.à McPherson on the other hand used a large amount of historically accurate documents, letters and diaries.à His use of reference and his bibliography was quite impressive.à In Rowlandââ¬â¢s book he wrote more of feelings than on giving facts.I know Civil War history relies heavily on personal letters and notes, but I think taking these documents for face value is what McPherson did instead of adding his own personal beliefs.à Letters between McClellan and his wife were used a lot in Rowlandââ¬â¢s book and this is fin e but letters like these, to a wife during war, really arenââ¬â¢t the best use for facts.à I think that at times of war many of the letters to family and friends leave much details out so they would not be worried about their family members so much of the writings need to be taken with a grain of salt.If asked which book I would put more stock into it would be McPhersonââ¬â¢s book.à It dealt more with black and white facts and was more of a historically timetabled book.à After seeing all the research he had put into his book he won hands down.à He did an excellent job of sifting through the tons of papers and historical documents to write a very clear and interesting book on the Civil War.Both authors agree that McClellan wasnââ¬â¢t the best general nor do they believe he was the worst.à McPherson mentioned others that were just as bad or worst.à McPherson did mention something that Rowland failed to mention and that was McClellanââ¬â¢s problem with chr onic exaggeration (McPherson, 1982 p. 212).à This was quite a problem that he had affecting his abilities and image as a general.à I agree with Roland that he wanted to give a more balanced look at the man General George B. McClellan and I think he did an excellent job in giving him overdue recognition for some of his achievements. He gave excellent reasons as to why he thought McClellan did what he did and thought he did a good job.à ââ¬Å"McClellanââ¬â¢s strategy, though reflective of the unrealistic war aims of the years 1861-1862 was cogent, reasoned, and consistent with conventional military wisdom and his personal views of the nature of the conflict.à It was not hallucinatory or deranged; it mirrored the views of the administration and of a sizeable, if not shrinking, majorityâ⬠(Rowland, 1998 p. 237).à Rowland goes on to say that because McClellan didnââ¬â¢t have great or a large amount of wins is the only reason he was given a bad reputation and was nââ¬â¢t credited with any of his accomplishments.Reference:McPherson, J.M. Stem Cell Research - 1022 Words
Persuasive Essay Many controversial and moral stricken issues have been put into question in todays modern society. Some of which include gay marriage, and abortion. Yet one of the most controversial has to be stem cell research. A Stem Cell is a generic cell that can make exact copies of itself indefinitely. It also has the ability to make specialized cells for various tissues in the body such as the heart muscle, brain and liver. But why exactly is stem cell research so controversial? Well mostly those who oppose embryonic stem cell research do so on the grounds that the cells die in the process. But what those people might not know is that an embryo is no bigger than a pinhead. And therefore there is no human suffering. Stem cellâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦California was one of the only states that approved a $3 billion bond to fund embryonic stem cell research, thus advancing our knowledge to this new breakthrough. With California approving this new research, it may encourage other states to e ngage in stem cell research. As a result of California funding stem cell research programs, might give other states an initiative to start embryonic stem cell research as well. We can now see the incredible amount of good that stem cell research will have on mankind if ever accepted in our society. But let us just analyze and compare the benefits stem cell research will have, as opposed to the war that is now taking place in Iraq. Is the suffering of so many young soldiers in Iraq worth the efforts that our government has put on this war? Why have they made it such a priority? Instead of focusing on something that will have a positive outcome in the future, they have chosen to go with a war, which in many peoples point of view has no purpose. Is the life of America, British, and Iraqi people worth it? Not to mention the effect it is having on the rest of the world. Is killing an embryonic cell really so morally wrong? Think about when a person kills a lobster for dinner. The lobster has a nervous system, which in turn feels pain; on the other hand an embryonic cell feels no pain at all. Analysis Of Mowing By Robert Frost And Carl Sandburg...
The viewpoint, Realism, prominently expressed between 1860 and 1890, is a subset of the viewpoint Modernism. Romanticism examines material and physiological reality and truth. The speakers are often more important than the plot and the focus is on the ethics of the speakerââ¬â¢s choices. Realism also focuses on the aspiration of the middle and lower class. Unlike Romanticism, Realism utilizes simple, non-poetic diction. Through the works, Mowing, Buttons, The Road and the End, and The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg express the viewpoint of realism through a variety of metaphors, personification, mood shift, rhythm and imagery. In his work, Mowing, Robert Frost utilizes metaphors and personification to examine perception. The poem portrays a speaker who contemplates the sound of a mowing scythe and its significance; the speaker declares that the scytheââ¬â¢s significance is not that of surreality or importance and states that the scytheââ¬â¢s hard work is what is actually important. The leading metaphor of this poem, a ââ¬Å"scytheâ⬠, used for hacking down hay, represents cutting down the unimportant and narrowing down to the truth. Frost utilized the personification scythes ââ¬Å"whisperâ⬠to create a sense of curiosity and amongst the speaker who ââ¬Å"known not well myselfâ⬠and the readers; however, the truth is that the scythe ââ¬Å"[does] not speakâ⬠it ââ¬Å"whispersâ⬠revealing that the scythe makes a barely audible sound and perhaps the speaker is so fine-tuned into the minute details of a

Business 4274F Consumer Behaviour Individual Assignment Oct, 26, 2012 General Information MacBook Air is a series of laptop created by Apple Inc. which makes the product distinguished and remarkable due to its ultraportability and thinness and elegant style. We will write a custom essay sample on Macbook Consumer Behaviour Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now It was originally introduced and released in Jan 29, 2008 by Steve Jobs, the previous CEO of Apple Inc. The company typically releases new models for this series annually. The most recent release was in Jun 11, 2012, which has two models, one has an 11ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ screen, and the other gets a 13ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ screen. The series of MacBook Air has been very successful since its inception. Its success is not only reflected in the vast profit it made for Apple, but also in the inspiration it gives to the whole PC manufacturing market to make ultraportable and elegant-style laptop which can also balance performance. Hardware The most important factor which makes the MacBook Air so successful, in my opinion, is the great balance of portability and power of the product. The laptop features a unibody design which makes possible to significantly reduce thickness and weight, and also it integrates with the latest CPU of Intel (3rh generation Core i5 and i7), and SSD (Solid State Drive) to give more power and capability to use. The design is another factor. The machined aluminium casing and backlit keyboard make it look elegant and handsome. This design also delivers inspiration to the PC manufacturer. Many PC manufacturers copied the design and used it to re-design their own laptop, and they call them ââ¬Å"Ultrabookâ⬠, which is targeted the same consumers and market as the MacBook Air. Software Compared with the hardware, the software is a more distinguished component of the product. MacBook Air, as well as other Mac series, is using the Macintosh system (also called OS X system). Unlike the PC industry where manufacturer buy the system license from Microsoft, which separates the hardware and software, OS X system is solely designed by Apple with the intention to work perfectly with the hardware. The trackpad on the laptop is the best over other laptops. People can use multi-touch gestures which enables them to control the laptop naturally and smoothly as they are using the iPad. And also, the system has come with many apps designed by Apple, so that those apps have uniform style with the system and great features. Involvement I have high-involvement attitude toward MacBook Air, referring to the ABC Model of Attitude. Before I got the feels about the product, I have got some beliefs of it, as follows: 1. The logo of Apple for me has been a label of ââ¬Å"good designâ⬠and ââ¬Å"user-friendlyâ⬠2. I had bought iPod and iPad, so Iââ¬â¢m sure the Mac will be suit me as the other two products do 3. A friend who also has the products told me the laptop changed his life 4. The OS X system is more beautiful than the Windows system 5. Portability is the priority because I want to carry it with me everywhere, and Mac has it 6. The system has faster response and less virus threats than Windows 7. Mac has very good synergy with other Apple products, so it can work well with my iPad I evaluated those beliefs according to my values, which is, referred to textbook, a belief that some conditions is preferable to its opposite. My values are the preferences of efficiency, elegant style, and reliable performance. Those beliefs give me a feel that the laptop is worth buying, though itââ¬â¢s more expense than other laptops. And then the feel gives me the behavior, which is the intention to pay for that. This is a high-involvement attitude toward the product, because the choice process is very careful and comprehensive. This also yields a great brand loyalty to Apple, and makes me wipe all the Windows-based laptop out from my buying list. Means-end Chain Analysis Attribute-value Table Attribute Fast response Portability Elegant style Less virus threats Benefit I can use it anytime I need it I can carry it with me I feel happy when I see the beautiful thing I feel safe and less worries Value A more efficient life A comfortable life Pleasure Safety Synergy with my iPad More efficient to use my iPad and the Mac Efficiency Associative Network of Knowledge The associative network of knowledge starts at the laptop, which is the class-level decision, and Appleââ¬â¢s laptop is the most favorable product for me, because it has the most links with the positive end states. The laddering technique illustrates the most important end state is efficient and comfortable. Cheap Windows system Microsoft PC Familiar Product Comfortable Laptop Good taste Elegant Apple Thin and light Portability Expensive Safe Synergy with other product Fast response Good CPU Carrying it with me SSD Efficient Advertisement In this advertisement, the MacBook Air was put on a file bag. The comparison of the Mac and the bag makes me believe the laptop can be placed into the small bag easily. The message the ad delivers to me is very clear: the product is very handy and portable. The message delivery is very efficient, because this is what I concern about. The picture let me think about the portability of the laptop, which is the attribute of the product, and then I would think about the benefits the portability can give me, for example I can carry it with me everywhere and I wonââ¬â¢t be tired by its weight. Last, I compared the benefits with the end values of mine, if those benefits meet the values, it yields positive attitude and feel about the product. Jennie Cannon Essay Example For Students
Jennie Cannon Essay HIST 17BSHORT PAPER #2On The Road The late 1940s and earl 1950s were a time of conformity. TheUnited States was emerging as a world power after World War II and therewere strong feelings of patriotism, nationalism, and overall consensus ofunity. There was little room for radical ideology during the beginning ofthe Cold War. This was the time period that gave birth to the Beatniks. Sitting around in coffee houses reading their own poetry orplaying/singing jazz, sometimes sitting in the dark with just a spotlighton you, wearing dark clothes like Goths do today, of course, they didntwear the make-up and the jewelry, just the dark clothes. This is the imageI get when I think about what Beatniks are. I dont know if it was becauseof the time, being after the war and all, that things were still a bitdark. Some people were still feeling down about the war. It didnt matterto them who won or lost; it was just the overall feeling. The Beat Movement was more of a literary movement but the Beatnikswerent necessarily writers. They just told their stories. Stories aboutlife whether its their own life or someone elses. Sex, drugs, poetry and jazz. Thats what the Beat Generation was allabout. People were having sex with whomever they wanted and didnt thinktwice about it. It was sexual freedom. Sex was the one and only holy andimportant thing in life. Hetero, homo, and bisexual, it really didntmatter to the Beatniks. If you were to read any piece of beat literatureyou are sure to find a story or reference to lewd sexual acts, homosexualencounters or casual sex. It just wasnt something the Beats foundobscene. The Sexual Revolution would have occurred eventually but theBeats were the ones who get the credit. Drugs helped them deal with life. I think it gave more oomph totheir lives. Made their stories more interesting and worth telling. Thisperiod reminds me a little of the sixties with the sex, drugs and rock roll. It was a freedom thing. Being doped-out, you had noresponsibilities; at least thats probably how you felt at the time. The Beats didnt hate America; they just had no respect for laws andmoral codes that they didnt agree with. The Beats accepted blacks andembraced their culture, especially jazz music. The Beats also embraced, and to some extent, advocated the use of illegal drugs. In a time when afamily and hard work were revered, the Beats idolized hobos and junkies. When you spoke about politics one could say that Beat politics were morelike anti-politics. There wasnt any real platform for beat politics; itwas basically whatever opinion was unpopular at the time. The Beats had an extreme dislike for authority. I guess you couldsay that authority was much of a fan of the Beats either, though. Justlike today people who acted and/or dressed different were singled out andsometimes arrested, it didnt matter if they had broken the law or not. The Beats were followed and watched by everyone from the local police tothe FBI. Why would the police and other law enforcement officers wastetheir time on a bunch of dumb kids? For the same reason they harass kidsfor skateboarding and listening to rap music now. It was a challenge tothe value system at the time. The Beats didnt waste their time at a jobor career either. They had better things to do, like write poetry andabuse illegal drugs.
